Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of joint damage, especially in the hands, hips, knees, lower back, and hands.
Symptoms normally begin after the age of 40 years,OA is more likely to affect women than men after the age of 50 years.
Causes
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue that permits nearly frictionless joint motion.
Risk factors
* Older age.
* Sex
* Obesity
* Certain occupations
* Genetics
Treatment
* Physical therapy--Stretching techniques help keep the joints flexible and supple.
* Joint pain and stiffness may become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult.
Some people are no longer able to work. When joint pain is this severe,doctors may suggest joint replacement surgery.
