Peptic ulcer

Peptic ulcer are sores in the lining of the esophagus, stomach or duodenum.

The two most important initiating causes of ulcers are infection of the stomach by a 

bacterium named "Helicobacter pylori" (H. pylori) and chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or NSAIDs. 

Cigarette smoking and Alchahol also is an important cause of ulcers as well as failure of ulcer healing.

Symptoms

Feeling full when eating

Upper abdominal pain, or burning . 

Bloating

vomiting, 

nausea 

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of an ulcer is made by either a barium upper gastrointestinal X-ray 

or an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Typhoid



    Typhoid fever is an acute illness associated with fever caused by the Salmonella Typhi bacteria.

After the ingestion of contaminated food or water, the Salmonella bacteria invade the small intestine and enter the bloodstream temporarily. 

The bacteria are carried by white blood cells in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, where they multiply and reenter the bloodstream.



Symptoms

Headaches

Fever as high as 104 degrees Farenheit

Diarrhea

weakness



Treatment

Typhoid fever is treated with antibiotics which kill the Salmonella bacteria. 



Avoiding infection

* Typhoid is spread by contact and ingestion of infected human feces. 

This can happen through an infected water source or when handling food.

*Avoid eating at street food stands, and only eat food that is still hot.

*Do not have ice in drinks.

Constipation -- A common problem for seniors

Nobody wants to talk about being constipated, but it’s an issue that many older adults and caregivers have to deal with.

To Prevent Constipation:

* Eat high-fiber foods such as raisins, raw vegetables, salads, bran cereals, whole-grain bread and fresh fruit.

* Eat prunes or figs.

* Drink plenty of liquids—at least eight glasses a day. 

* Use laxatives 

* Do daily exercise, like a brisk half-hour walk.

Stroke

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, 

depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.



Risk factors

Age —People age 55 or older have a higher risk of stroke than do younger people.

Being overweight or obese

Physical inactivity

Heavy or binge drinking

Cigarette smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke

Diabetes

Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, heart defects, heart infection or abnormal             heart rhythm

Personal or family history of stroke, heart attack or transient ischemic attack.



Symptoms

Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg.

Trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Trouble with speaking and understanding. 

The good news is that strokes can be treated and prevented.

Causes

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue that permits nearly frictionless joint motion.



Risk factors

* Older age. 

* Sex

* Obesity

* Certain occupations

* Genetics



Treatment

* Physical therapy--Stretching techniques help keep the joints flexible and supple. 

* Joint pain and stiffness may become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult.

Some people are no longer able to work. When joint pain is this severe,doctors may suggest joint replacement surgery.
